What Parents Are Saying
Myth: ABA is only for individuals with autism.
While ABA is a scientifically proven way to teach new skills to those with autism, there is countless research and real time classrooms which show that ABA can improve the lives of any individual. ABA is used around the world in not only teaching autistic children, but also improving neurotypical classroom behavior, helping other neurodivergent individuals increase their social emotional development, improving business management, and other personal therapies. Here is Village Vantage, we use the fundamentals of ABA to create individualized learning plans and behavioral supports for a variety of our young clients.
Myth: ABA creates rigid individuals, and is rigid in its teachings.
While every implementation of ABA might be varied through different providers, we here at Village Vantage, utilize compassionate and individualized interventions to help your children access our society in a way that is meaningful for them and your family. We take the science of ABA, and bring it into your home, your child’s school, and your community, to give your child the skills to access the world around them.
Myth: ABA only used “DTT”, or direct style/table teaching.
As stated above, at Village Vantage, our staff is trained to take the principles of ABA which are proven to increase skill acquisition, and decrease harmful behaviors, into the real world. While we utilize table teaching when appropriate, you will often see us using natural play and integrating with your child’s day to day schedule in order to promote a real generalization of skills being learned.
Myth: Emotional development is not considered in ABA.
We consider emotional development, social emotional learning, and self-regulation, at the forefront of what we aim to give your child here at Village Vantage. We are a neurodivergent positive organization that aims to be a safe space for your child to be themselves, and learn the social emotional skills that will aid them in every aspect of their development.
Myth: ABA requires an intense and rigorous time schedule to be effective.
Every child is different – which means every child requires a different level of support in order to reach their potential. We believe that assessment of needs, and consideration of child age/schedule, is key in determining an appropriate therapy schedule. We have clients who receive up to 25 hours a week while being supported in school, home, and community environments, and have other clients who are only seen for 1-10 hours a week – it all depends on need and appropriateness. What we do not believe in, is an overuse of therapy hours to the detriment of our clients well being as children.
